Organic Italian Farro from Famed Artisan Giacomo Santoleri

Organic Italian Farro from Famed Artisan Giacomo Santoleri

»rank: 4343

from: Giacomo Santoleri

0ur opinion: :A barley-like grain from Abruzzo. Farro is emmer, an early form of wheat eaten by the Etruscans and their conquerors, the Roman legion. Giacomo Santoleri grows this ancient wheat on a small farm on the hilly grounds of the Abruzzo countryside. He uses traditional methods and produces his products without the use of pesticides or chemicals. With a flavor somewhere between barley and wheat, farro makes a delicious soup and cold salad. Santoleri's farro is dense and chewy with a pronounced wheaty flavor. lt is terrific ...

0ur opinion: :A selection of twelve napolitains from three intensities of dark chocolate for an enthusiastic journey of flavour. The 'Tuscan Blacks' are three different, proprietary blends of different cocoa beans from plantations exclusively selected by Amedei. As Amedei master chocolatier Cecelia Tessieri explains, this is 'real chocolate,' the result of over three centuries of European experiment, innovation, discussion and evolution in customs. This selection is an attempt to capture, within each single napolitain, all the flavour which chocolate is capable of giving.

Spanish Marcona Almonds - Raw

»rank: 3256

from: Gourmet Food Store

0ur opinion: :0ne of our two unique Spanish almonds, Marconas are really large, with tons of nutty, milky flavor to go with it, thanks to a higher fat content. The Marcona almond is used predominantly in pastries and baked goods. They are quite famous around the world and very different than almonds here in America - both in flavor and shape. Grown in the Mediterranean coast of Spain - from Malaga to Tarragona, the Marcona is easily recognizable by it's unique light brown, almost holey shell. Try a ...

With simple techniques passed down from one generation to the other this pasta, which following the purist attitude of the makers only comes in a few classic shapes, is made utilizing first grade durum wheat flour grown on the family property . Tab Benoit's album titles leave little doubt as to where he's from or the music he plays. Brother to the Blues, Fever for the Bayou, Wetlands, and now Power of the Pontchartrain exude the sweaty Louisiana swamp, blues, and R&B inherent in their names. But that only tells part of the story--the rest is in the grooves where Benoit's distinctive, grainy voice and tough Telecaster leads bring soul, grit, and intensity to a sound already infused with an earthy sensibility. There's more of the same on this disc, but that's no criticism. Benoit generally sticks with others' songs here, yet he unearths hidden gems. Julie Miller's "Midnight and Lonesome" is dragged into the murky swamps as a driving ballad with eerie qualities that live up to its name. Miller and husband Buddy are also credited with the righteous-yet-rugged gospel of "Shelter Me." "Somebody's Got to Go," originally by Lonnie Johnson, gets a crisp, frisky makeover, and even Buffalo Springfield's crusty "For What It's Worth" takes a swim in the muddy waters of Benoit's home state, with a little help of some altered, post-Katrina lyrics. The guitarist lets his Cajun influences fly on the bouncy rhythms of "Sac-Au-Lait Fishing," the album's only original, and shifts into pleading Otis Redding mode for the aching blues ballad "I'm Guilty of Lovin' You." The Chicago-by-way-of-the-Delta shuffle of "One Foot in the Bayou" is also an apt description of Benoit's approach. He touches on a variety of Americana styles, yet always keeps part of himself planted firmly in the wetlands of his roots. --Hal Horowitz
