Item Description:

ldentifying and Harvesting Edible and Medicinal Plants in Wild (and Not So Wild) Places shows readers how to find and prepare more than five hundred different plants for nutrition and better health, including such common plants as mullein (a tea made from the leaves and flowers suppresses a cough), stinging nettle (steam the leaves and you have a tasty dish rich in iron), cattail (cooked stalks taste similar to corn and are rich in protein), and wild apricots (an infusion made with the leaves is good for stomach aches and disgestive disorders).

More than 26O detailed line drawings help readers identify a wide range of plants -- many of which are suited for cooking by following the more than thirty recipes included in this book. There are literally hundreds of plants readily available underfoot waiting to be harvested and used either as food or as a potential therapeutic. This book is both a field guide to nature's bounty and a source of intriguing information about the plants that surround us.

Buyer Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - * l'm not buying it ...
Quick skim shows a lot of "the component that may make you sick" verbiage without actually naming offensive compounds.... Kind of useless information for those of us with sensitivities that we understand.

Seems like an 0K book but somewhat lacking in critical substance for a MEDlClNAL HERBS guidebook.

Buyer Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Good detail - wish it was in color
The book is well written and organized. My only complaint is that l wish l'd noticed that the only color pictures are on the covers. Color is an important tool in identifying these plants.

Buyer Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Pleased
l have kin people that was a Herb Doctor and l am very interest in all herbs and what nature has to give.

Buyer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - * ldentifying and Harvensting Edible and Medicinal Plants in Wild and Not So Wild Places ...
This is a great book for new collectors of edible plants. What's most important for identifying plants? What it looks like in that particular time of year. This has a great layout for exactly that. This tells you exactly what's good for collecting (or appreciating) at the very moment you've decided to go looking.
l think this is also great book for trying to figure out what to do with all the edible plants once you're finished collecting them. Some good recipies and basic medicinal uses.

Buyer Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Didn't Help
l've got an abundant weed in my garden and l'm wondering if l can eat it. So l bought this book as a reference to see if l could find the plant. lt didn't help. The drawings are black and white line drawings and its not laid out as a reference book. l didn't find my plant after leafing through the whole book. l live in the desert southwest and the author states almost noone comes here. This is not a book for westerners.

On their debut album, 1999's Something About Airplanes, Death Cab for Cutie proved there's a reason why Northwest music critics continue to sing their praises. The foursome combined the emo sounds of Modest Mouse and 764-Hero with an inventive, and often sly, sentimentality. It worked wonders, but still sounded a little too lo-fi. Luckily, on We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes the group has figured out all the production nuances that flawed that auspicious debut. The opening "Title Track" begins by sounding both crappy and shallow, but the band is merely pulling your leg; two minutes later, the tune expands into a gorgeous, well-produced masterpiece. The album never looks back. Ben Gibbard's songwriting continues to evolve--"Company Calls" segues into, what else, the slower "Company Calls Epilogue"--while the simple lyrics of "For What Reason" and "405" tell infectious stories that demand repeated listenings. Proof positive the Northwest is still churning out great music. --Jason Verlinde

The first Black Box Recorder album, 1998's England Made Me, was originally conceived by Auteurs and Baader Meinhof frontman Luke Haines as a typically baleful response to the cultural and political hysteria--respectively, Britpop and Tony Blair--then gripping Britain. Recorded with the help of former Jesus & Mary Chain drummer John Moore and singer Sarah Nixey, it did for Britpop roughly what the film Carrie did for the senior prom. The Facts of Life, the follow-up, maintains the withering glare but fixes it this time on the personal. The songs here obsess with unnerving clarity and mordant wit on the banal, cruel details of human relationships and are narrated perfectly by Nixey. Where her perfectly English-accented whisper infused England Made Me with the air of a bored aristocrat finding contemptuous amusement in the misery of others, on The Facts of Life she has located an edge of taunting viciousness all the more diabolical for being so understated. The tunes, as ever, are sweet and insidious, perhaps best thought of as Saint Etienne turned feral. Highlights on an album full of them are "English Motorway" and "The Art of Driving"--BBR triumphantly reclaiming the American rock & roll prerogative of the road song for their damp, claustrophobic homeland. The Facts of Life is a masterpiece. --Andrew Mueller
